HISTORY:

JOHN J. LOGUE was the second of three children of JOHN JOSEPH and MARGARET (FARREN) LOGUE, both of whom died while he was very young. He had two sisters, KATHERINE (b:- d: 1935) who married a Mr. GRANT (no record of their children) and BRIDGET who never married, she was the housekeeper for the parish priest in Malin Head. JOHN was a mounted policeman in Malin Head and, after his marriage to MARY DOHERTY, he came to America in March 1911. He worked in the supply room of the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. (CPT) in Franklin, PA. for a number of years, after which he worked as a janitor for St. John's Episcopal Church, the Franklin Library and the Lamberton National Bank. In 1935, he returned to the CPT until his early death from complications of pneumonia and pleurisy in Jan. 1937.

MARY DOHERTY was the second of nine children of JAMES VINCENT and MARJORIE (GIBBONS) DOHERTY (b: ? d: 08/20/1945). She came to America alone in 1905 and worked as a live-in companion for the family of a cousin, whose husband was a DR. EDWARD DOHERTY of Avalon, PA. for about two years. She and her friends Mary and Annie Shannon moved to Franklin, PA, where she worked as a personal companion for Col. Lewis' wife. When the Lewis' left for an extended vacation in Europe, MARY went along as far as Ireland and during her stay, she married JOHN JOSEPH LOGUE. She returned to Franklin with the Lewis' and JOHN followed about a month later, in March 1911.

Neither of her husband's sisters came to America; however, her brother JOHN came and stayed at their home in Franklin for a short while. He then returned to Malin Head, married and raised his family there. Her sister ANNA, followed by her brother JAMES (b: 1894 d: June 1934) and, later, her brother EDWARD (b: 6/29/1905 d: ?) came, stayed a short while and each moved on to Chicago, where they married and raised their families.

JOHN JOSEPH LOGUE HISTORY (Continued):

JAMES VINCENT (Continued)

Throughout his life JAMES was to suffer the effects of his war related back injury, but complained little of it; he was witty and ever smiling. He left the Joy Mfg. Co. and worked for the Pennsylvania Welfare Department for a number of years. Divorced in 1969, he died in Reno, PA, February 16, 1971.

MARY MARGARET, the youngest of the family, was the first to be born in a hospital. Her parents had purchased a home (about 1918) at 218 Atlantic Avenue in Franklin, which was to be the family home until her mother, seventy-eight years of age, a widow of 25 years, and suffering the effects of an automobile accident a year earlier, agreed to live with her and her family in Toledo, Ohio, in 1962.

Her father named her after his wife and his mother (his decision may also have been influenced by a beautiful neighbor girl, also a red head, named Mary Margaret Bigler).

MARY MARGARET attended the Catholic Sacred Heart Academy in Franklin for the full eleven year curriculum, graduating in 1939. During the summers of her last two years there, she taught religion to public school students, five mornings a week for four weeks. Her father, sick only six days, died of pneumonia when she was a Freshman. Her oldest brother JOHN took over the support of she and her mother.

She went on to graduate from the Franklin High School in 1940. Following graduation, she was employed in the WPA Office on Grant St. in Franklin, until the office was closed as a result of WWII. She worked for the Delinquent Tax Office for a month before joining the Exchange Bank & Trust Co. She worked in the Trust Department of the bank (and during war bond drives, for the Commercial Department). She was well liked and being, by far, the youngest employee, filled-in for the others during sicknesses and vacations. It was pleasant work, almost family-like. They would celebrate everyone's birthday by sending her after ice-cream cones for all the employees.

She was always very close to her brothers and sisters, more so, since she was the youngest of the family and also since her parents had no other relatives closer than Chicago. She was the maid of honor at her sisters' and her brother JOHN's weddings and a bride's maid at her brother JIM's wedding.

During a party announcing the engagement of ANNE MAHAFFEY to her brother JIM, held at the MAHAFFEY's Buttermilk Hill farm, ANNE's father seemed to single her out for a lengthy dialogue about one of his sons. It seems he was a Lead Bombardier with the Eighth Air Force in England, highly decorated (as evidenced by all the medals and citations she was subjected to) and obviously was a prime mover in winning the war! The experience left her with a considerable doubt about this man's intentions - and his enthusiasm. After the party, she inquired of her brother JOHN's wife, PRUDY, (who had gone to Franklin High School with this "Hero") and was told, "I didn't know him that well, but he seemed like a nice guy - then".

It was at her brother JIM's wedding, in June 1945, that she met her future husband, BOB MAHAFFEY. He was home on leave while en route from England to a new assignment, in California. He proposed marriage on their first date. This was not so unusual, considering he wore her yellow-flowered hat (with his Army Air Force uniform), while they shopped for sweets after church one Sunday. His brother CHUCK explained this strange behavior, saying " . . . he's flak happy!". But, he convinced her otherwise, . . . and they were married December 1, 1945 in St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Franklin, PA

They settled in a two-room, second floor, apartment in the Shadyside district of Pittsburgh, PA while he attended the University of Pittsburgh. MARY MARGARET busied herself typing homework assignments for her husband (and his brother GEORGE, who also had moved in while he attended Mount Mercy College). She also worked for her husband's Uncle IKE, at the Mamaux Awning and Tent Mfg. Co., as a receptionist-billing clerk. Their first child, PAUL, was born three months premature and died within the hour of his birth (b: d: 9/14/1946) at the Franklin Hospital.
